Psyllium Husk is a natural bulking agent for stool (feces) that is high in fiber and mucilage; restores bowel functions; promotes healthy colon function; cleanses the large intestines; expels toxins; and may be beneficial for constipation, intestinal inflammation, stomach and duodenal ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, atherosclerosis, diabetes, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, cholesterol levels, psoriasis, weight loss and obesity.
Psyllium Seed Husks
Adults and children over 12: 1 rounded teaspoon, one to three times a day. Children 6-12: 1/2 to 1 level teaspoon, one to three times a day. Start by taking 1 serving each day. Gradually increase to 3 servings per day as needed. Stir powder briskly into at least 8 ounces (a full glass) of juice, water or other fluid. Drink immediately. Drinking additional liquid is helpful. If minor gas or bloating occurs, reduce the amount you take until your system adjusts.

If you suspect you may have an intestinal or bowel stricture or obstruction, consult your doctor and use a very small amount first to test and increase very gradually over time, if in doubt, do not use. A very small percentage of individuals, particularly health care providers who have been occupationally exposed to psyllium dust, may develop a sensitivity to psyllium. This sensitivity may result in an allergic reaction. If you experience a strong reaction, with difficulty in swallowing or breathing after taking this product, seek immediate medical attention. Keep out of reach of children. Store below 86 degrees F (30 degrees C). Keep tightly closed to protect from humidity.
NOTE: 1.84% of women over age 60 have heart palpitations caused by psyllium. Either due to an allergic reaction, or due to psyllium slowing down the digestion/absorption of carbohydrates, thus resulting in low blood sugar and increased heart rate.

People find psyllium seed or the MetaCleanse (contains psyllium along with flaxseed and bentonite) useful for relieving diarrhea as it bulks up the stool by absorbing the excess liquid, thus reducing the frequency and urgency of bowel movements – this is especially helpful for Short Bowel Syndrome. Others prefer L-Glutamine - which taken on an empty stomach causes the bowel to absorb excess water and at the same time is a primary nutrient for the intestinal lining.
Psyllium and MetaCleanse are helpful for constipation because they attract water to your stools, thus keeping them soft and easier to pass (you also have to make sure you're drinking enough water!).
If you want to simultaneously detox, then combine your psyllium with bentonite clay in equal parts and drink lots of water. But do not use bentonite long-term (about two weeks at time is usually sufficient) as it adsorbs and carries out all microbes (i.e. both good and bad bacteria). Or, again, you could just use MetaCleanse, since it also contains bentonite (although in much smaller amounts, so it's safe for ongoing use).
Be very careful if you suspect an intestinal stricture; proceed very slowly, starting at a small dose (1/4 tsp) and gradually building up to your tolerance level.
